How Scott Lang and the Quantum Realm might factor into Endgame.

The trailer for Avengers: Endgame is finally here, and it reveals that Scott Lang somehow managed to escape from the Quantum Realm, which he was left stranded in at the end of Ant-Man and the Wasp.In light of that tag at the end of the Endgame trailer, which also revealed Luis' van (which has a mini-Quantum Realm machine in the back, remember!), we've updated and republished the story below breaking down how the Quantum Realm might play a role in the fourth Avengers film.

This report was originally published in July 2018 following the release of Ant-Man and the Wasp.

How will Scott Lang escape from the Quantum Realm? And how might his plight in the post-credits scene of Ant-Man and the Wasp impact the events of Avengers 4?

Those are arguably the biggest questions fans had after watching the latest Marvel movie so let’s dive into the ways in which Ant-Man might escape the Quantum Realm in the sequel to Infinity War. Starting with ...

Time Travel

This is the safe money bet. Right as he’s venturing into the Quantum Realm, Scott is told by Janet van Dyne: “Don’t get sucked into a time vortex.” That seems to be a pretty on-the-nose warning but also one clear enough for a dope like Scott to eventually realize might be the key to him escaping his predicament.

Of course, a time vortex suggests multiple timelines as well as multiple attempts by Scott to set things right, not unlike Doctor Strange coming to bargain with Dormammu in his solo movie. Scott could then attempt multiple tries at either escaping the Quantum Realm or outright stopping Thanos in the next Avengers movie.

Who Could Help Ant-Man Escape?

The rules of time, space, and reality are already pretty loose when it comes to the Quantum Realm so perhaps some “dead” characters might still exist in some alternate reality or timeline accessed by Scott Lang.

For example, maybe he encounters Doctor Strange, who scanned over 14 million possible futures in Infinity War before finding the only one that ultimately lead to victory. Doctor Strange has knowledge of other dimensions, having passed through the Quantum Realm himself, and at least some version of him knows of Thanos. Strange then could help point a hapless Scott in the right direction.

Or is it possible Captain Marvel is the key to Scott escaping from the Quantum Realm? She’s the next Marvel superhero set to make their big screen debut before Avengers 4 so it stands to reason her solo movie will somehow plant more seeds for the Infinity War sequel.

Could Carol Danvers encounter a dimension- or time-traveling Scott Lang during her cosmic adventure? Sure, but it also seems far more likely Nick Fury’s pager message at the end of Infinity War is the way she learns of what transpired in the present (Captain Marvel is set in the ‘90s, remember).

Another possible ally for getting Ant-Man out of the Quantum Realm? The Wasp — Janet van Dyne, that is. Remember, she and Scott have some sort of psychic connection due to his previous foray into the Quantum Realm in which she’d been trapped for thirty-odd years.

Did Janet intentionally or otherwise implant or impart any sort of further knowledge of the Quantum Realm in his mind than Scott previously realized? Or — again, since space, time and reality all work differently there — does Scott actually encounter a version of Janet down there while trying to hop around timelines/realities on his own?

There’s also a far less super-powerful character who could help Scott escape the Quantum Realm: Luis. That is if he’s still alive following Thanos’s finger snap. Since we didn’t see him disappear then we can at least assume maybe he survived.

Luis would at least know where Scott and the Pyms were at the time of their disappearance since they were using his van. He could arrive and hear Scott over the radio. It would then be up to Luis, with maybe Scott’s verbal guidance, to figure out how to bring him home. If Luis can’t, then he would need to seek out Bill Foster … provided he’s not dead, too. Are Cassie, Ghost, Dave, Kurt, Agent Jimmy Woo, Maggie, and Jim all gone now, too? Could any of them help Scott get out of his predicament, too?

New Powers to the Rescue?

Or maybe Scott won’t need anyone’s help at all.

As Janet explained to Hank Pym during their return trip, the Quantum Realm changed her. She evolved and gained new powers as a result of her time in the Quantum Realm. The film also established that Ghost’s whole body was altered due to a momentary exposure to quantum energy so what will any sort of prolonged stay down there do to Scott? Will he gain super powers as Janet did? And, if so, will these powers, coupled with his size-altering suit, prove to be the key to helping the surviving Avengers defeat Thanos in Avengers 4?

However he ultimately escapes the Quantum Realm, Ant-Man’s plight will clearly be a factor at play in Avengers 4. Those were out guesses on the matter. Now let us know in the comments what your theories are for how Scott Lang escapes the Quantum Realm in Avengers 4!
