Before starting any treatment, the first consultation will help to identify any of the following contraindications:
- A tan
- Photosensitizing treatment (roaccutane, cortisone, antibiotics, etc.)
- Herpes
- Skin infections or diseases
- Skin lesions
- Tattoos
- Pregnancy
- Breastfeeding
Potential risks
Laser hair removal may pose a risk to the skin if certain rules are not followed, but these risks are low as the laser only reaches the superficial layers of the skin.
The following scenarios increase the risks of depigmentation, hyperpigmentation, burns or skin infections:
- Incorrect choice of laser: the Alexandrite laser should not be chosen for black skin, for example
- Incorrect laser settings: if the fluence is too high, it can burn the skin
- A tan: changes in pigmentation and/or burns
- Tattoos: changes in pigmentation and/or burns
- Photosensitizing treatment (roaccutane, cortisone, antibiotics, etc.): changes in pigmentation and/or burns
- Herpes
- Skin infections or diseases
- Skin lesions
- Eye injuries if protection glasses are not worn
To date, there is no concrete evidence on the risks of laser hair removal during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. These are basic contraindications.
The most common side effects – mild irritation, itching or skin swelling – gradually subside in the hours following the session.
