Alright 2024 grads, this one's for you! (or anyone else trying to break into sports)Here's some of the most common questions I receive + my answers/insights:1) Who should I reach out to within the organization?- Pro Sports: Inside Sales Manager- College Athletics: Director of Ticket Sales2) How can I set myself apart from other candidates? - Complete an internship with a sports organization- Express a passion for sales/business development (This is different than being a big sports fan)- Do research on the organization and ask meaningful questions during the interview (Having zero questions prepared is a missed opportunity)3) What the best advice I've ever received?- The best advice I've received is to take your first job based on who is going to be your first manager since that person is going to help the lay foundation for your career. What did I miss? Drop any additional questions in the comments.

Such a surprise. I didn't see this coming at all. But our paid internship program for USL W has been one of the most fulfilling parts of this journey. We started with a simple question to players, what are your interested in? From there, it was easy to place players who were interested in club roles. We needed the work, why not give it to our players. The results have been incredible!! Our goalkeeper Ayana Aoyagi is from Australia and plays college at Florida Tech. She said she know (basic basic) shooting and editing but would really love to learn. I gave her the team camera and based her compensation on videos produced. I think that was the perfect carrot for a young person in college. She has not hesitated to shoot, edit, and deliver. Each time we have met, we added an element to her process. She was excited to shoot, edit, and deliver. Then we added story ideation, shoot, edit, deliver. Then it was story, shoot for specific after effects skill, post production outline, edit, deliver. And so on.. Her progress just keeps flying. I couldn't be more proud of her. The video below was assigned by me to for a pre-game hype video. Take a look. This is someone who is 5-6 weeks into shooting and post production. Her feel for shots is growing, her use of the camera, and now I'm seeing her have influence on the content subjects. The things that can only be learned if you have constant enthusiasm for the craft. Keep going Ayana!!! #uslw #americanas

Today is the last day of Sales School for our US team. We asked two students training together to share their Sales School experience:First-year intern Tyler Brittingham stated: “My last few weeks leading up to Sales School, my habits started to decline, even though I knew I was going to be going into one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. But, me coming in the first week... I’ve already noticed my habits slowly improving every second. It’s literally a whole new lifestyle I didn’t even know I was capable of having." Second-year intern Meredith St.Clair stated: "...Being able to lead other people as a second-year, being able to guide them is an awesome opportunity. Being able to practice that now, before going into the summer – I think it’s great. I love Sales School.”We're so excited for all our students as they begin their summers, as they take that leap, as they work towards gaining the skills and character they need to reach their goals in life. #southwesternadvantage #internship2023 #summerinternship #educationconsultant #businessmanagement #traininganddevelopment

Helping create memories for nearly three decades!
I'm looking forward to Friday. It is a milestone just a few years ago, I never thought I would reach. Despite being in minor league/franchise amateur sports for approximately three decades (give or take; however you factor COVID, internships, etc.) I have never been part of the same organization for four consecutive seasons. Assuming I make it to Friday's Wilmington Blue Rocks home opener, that feat will be accomplished. While I have had many great runs with ownership groups and teams throughout the years, this is extra special for me. Whether right or wrong, I have always been one to focus more on today then the future as there is no telling what can and will happen. That was reinforced even further in my mind during COVID. I had lots of time to myself and I just realized traveling around the country was not as fun and as important to me as it was earlier. I just wanted to come back home and be closer to me family and in particular my parents (which I am glad I did as my dad passed a few years back). I figured that meant the end of my sports career. I tried some other things, but for one reason or another they just didn't pan out. While I was around family and where I wanted to be, I was in a dark place career wise, no question about it. Sure, I had an existing relationship with the Rocks, and thought what it would be like to return, but I just didn't think that market conditions at the time would allow that. Then out of the "Blue," I got a text from Robert Ford who asked how I was feeling and if I was ready to get back in. After he convinced me he wasn't joking, and he thought I could add value to the club, I certainly was all in.I still though was a bit unsure of how things would go. I thought I may be a short term fix to help get them going after COVID and not quite certain how my role would evolve. I just decided to take it one day at a time and live in the moment. Here we are now. I certainly feel as though I have emerged as a leader of the team and have become a sign of stability. My sales in 2023 and 2022 were my top two sales seasons respectively in my career. Sure, Wilmington is a great market but I am so proud of what we have accomplished. To do this with my hometown team, which is such a special franchise, is something I will forever cherish and be proud of.Who knows what will happen down the road. I know I will never be that MLB GM or a big time college athletics director. I know a couple things though. I very much do enjoy coming to the ballpark and helping people create memories. And I am looking forward to Friday.

I’m happy to share that I’ve obtained a new certification: Sales Certified Internship from Red Bull! I just completed Red Bull On-Premise Sales on Forage. In the simulation I;Completed a job simulation focused on On-Premise Sales activities at Red BullUsed Excel to visualize which on-premise clients are performing best and worst.Communicated observations to Red Bull team members about why certain clients are performing better than others.Utilized active listening and social proof to overcome a client’s objections resulting in them more prominently featuring Red Bull in their bar. It was too brainstorming period for me to learn new business analytic tools as well as implementation of those made analysis simpler.#Businessanalysis #sales #RedBull #forage

At my internship with Weber State Athletics I worked with people across different departments to set up for game days. Game days require good communication and teamwork. During game day we communicate with coaches to make sure things are set up how they would like them. This experience is teaching me about what goes on behind the scenes of sporting events. While doing research I found this article on Sports Marketing in the Digital Age: https://lnkd.in/g7UnfkHF
