This homemade turmeric latte, commonly known as the ancient Ayurvedic beverage: Golden Milk..is easy to make, diary free, & full of anti-inflammatory spices!

Every time I make a homemade turmeric latte, or any latte actually, I just feel SO good. There’s just something that I love about making a warm, feel-good drink when it’s cold outside. This turmeric latte, or golden milk…as it’s commonly referred to, has been one of my go-to’s within the past few months. I really found a blend of ingredients & a turmeric latte powder that is just so delicious & they all just work so well with each other, so I’m really excited to share!

Why Turmeric?

Turmeric is an Indian spice which contains compounds known as Curcuminoids. Making up those compounds is Curcumin which is an immensely powerful anti-inflammatory agent, as well as, an antioxidant that is actually able to reduce free radicals within the body! So while Turmeric powder is a wonderful spice, it’s actually the Curcumin found within the Turmeric that does all of the work!

Health Benefits of Curcumin

  • natural ant-inflammatory agent
  • boosts antioxidant enzymes
  • improves brain function
  • lowers risk of heart disease
  • beneficial herb for cancer treatment & prevention
  • helps to alleviate symptoms of depression
  • delays aging
  • fights against degenerative brain diseases such as Alzheimer’s

How is the Turmeric activated in the latte?

Although Curcumin is the most active ingredient making up the Turmeric spice, it is actually poorly absorbed throughout our bloodstream. Turmeric needs to be paired with black pepper, in order to activate the Curcumin, which then allows more of it to be absorbed into our bodies!

So don’t skimp on the black pepper, because it’s important!!

What should you make the turmeric latte with?

You are more than welcome to warm up all of the ingredients over a stove top & mix them together with a whisk, but I prefer making my lattes in my Vitamix blender. By using a Vitamix or any other high speed blender, you are able to blend everything together seamlessly! It also helps create the little frothy bubbles at the top of the latte…which is personally my favorite part!

Can you serve this homemade turmeric latte over ice?

Definitely! You can easily make a larger batch! Just double or triple the recipe, keep it in an air-tight container in the fridge, & serve it later…either reheated on the stove or over ice! Just be sure to shake it well because the spices will probably begin to separate!

Don’t have a turmeric latte powder? Here’s what to use instead!

If you don’t have a Turmeric latte mix, you can substitute the mix for 1/2 tsp fresh or powdered ginger, 1 tsp of Turmeric, a pinch of black pepper, & cinnamon based on preference! You can also add a little nutmeg or 1/2 tsp of pure vanilla extract for some extra added flavor! I go over this again in the recipe notes below!

For my turmeric lattes, I like to use a pre-made turmeric blend. For this one specifically, I used a Turmeric Chai from JAHMU. This is actually one of the best blends I’ve tried. It’s not too spicy or overpowering. It’s also caffeine & sugar free which is always nice & it really does blend well into liquid.

I personally really like the JAHMU Turmeric Chai because it contains more than one spice, including turmeric, ginger, fenugreek, ceylon, cinnamon, cardamom, fennel seed, cloves, nutmeg, black pepper, & cayenne! There’s definitely a bit of spice, as you can probably assume, but I love a little kick in a golden milk latte like this! It’s so delicious!

Ingredients

  • 1.5cups Water
  • 1/2cupCoconut Milk
  • 1tspJAHMU Turmeric Chai *See Notes*
  • 2tspMaple Syrup
  • 1tsp Coconut Butter
  • Dash ofCinnamon
  • 1ScoopVital Proteins Collagen Peptides (Optional)

Instructions

  1. Warm up the water on a stovetop or by using an electric kettle, which is what I love using.

  2. While the water is heating up, add all other ingredients to a Vitamix or high speed blender.

  3. Add the hot water & blend well! If you are using a blender, don't worry about heating up the coconut milk, the hot water will warm it up while blending!

  4. Pour into a mug & enjoy! You can sprinkle a little more turmeric on top of the latte for an extra little flare!

Recipe Notes

  • **Reminder, if you don't have a pre-made blend, use 1 tsp of Turmeric, 1/2 tsp of Ginger, Cinnamon based on preference & a crack of Black Pepper!**
  • If you are new to Turmeric & worried about the taste, start with just 1/2 teaspoon instead of 1 full teaspoon.
  • The coconut butter helps make the latte creamier but can be substituted for coconut oil.
  • Although optional, Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides help make the latte frothy! Vegans omit!
