Read The Label
It should go without saying, but before trying any cleaning method, check your sweater’s care label. If the tag says “dry clean only,” don’t try to wash it at home. Dry cleaning solvent is lighter than water and is much gentler on clothes. Likewise, if the label says “hand wash only,” don’t machine wash it, even on the most delicate cycle. Ignoring the care label is one of the fastest ways to ruin your favorite sweater.
Hand Wash Sweaters
Sweaters are delicate, and the heat and agitation of a washing machine can cause shrinkage. The most delicate at-home cleaning method is handwashing, and it’s not as hard as you may think! To hand wash a sweater simply:
- Fill a small tub or clean sink with cool water
- Add some mild detergent
- Turn your sweater inside out and gently swish it around in the water
- Let your sweater soak in the mixture for 10-15 minutes
- Rinse the sweater
- Replace the water in the tub with clean water
- Gently swish your sweater in the clean water
- Resist the urge to wring out your sweater! Gently pat the sweater and hang it flat to dry. Do not hang it, as this can cause your sweater to stretch
Washing Sweaters in Machine
A common concern is how to wash sweaters in the washer. Many sweaters’ labels say they’re machine washable, but that doesn’t mean you can wash them on any setting. To machine wash your sweaters, use either the “delicate,” “handwash,” or “slow” cycle settings, and always wash with cold water. To give your sweaters extra protection, use a mesh laundry bag to reduce friction. Avoid washing sweaters with heavy or bulky items, like jeans, towels, and sweatshirts. After washing, don’t put it in the dryer, even on the lightest settings. Instead, hang it flat to air dry.
