A new season means new hair, right? There is something to be said about a fresh hair look to start spring off in the right way. And nothing says fresh like chopping off your ends and going for a shorter style. It's no secret that short hair has grown in popularity over the last year or two, with the likes of Hailey Bieber and Zendaya convincing everyone to get a bob hairstyle, but what's in store for the season ahead?
As someone who likes to be ahead of the trends, I decided to reach out to Emma Vickery, creative director at Percy & Reed, to find out what short hairstyles and haircuts we can expect to see everywhere this year. She shared all of her insider info, including tips and tricks on how to wear your new look. Whether you like chic, simple styles or something a bit more edgy, there's something for everyone. So, without further ado, keep on scrolling for the biggest short hair trends of 2024, and make sure to get your appointment booked before everyone else decides that it's time for a refresh…
4 Short-Hair Trends That Are Dominating in 2024
1. Structured Bob
Yep that's right, the bob haircut isn't going anywhere for 2024. "The bob era is back," says Vickery. "We’ve seen much more fluid shapes over the past couple of years, but I think it’s time for more structured shapes to return."
I personally love a structured bob, as I think it looks super chic. It's all sharp edges, blunt fringes and not a layer in sight.
It looks great with straight hair too.
This haircut is great for enhancing your natural curly texture.

"In addition to the bob hairstyle, the grungecore trend was a big hit this season," says Vickery. We can expect to see this a lot more this year, but according to Vickery, the grungy haircuts will feature stronger outlines.
These grungy hairstyles are perfect for those who like a bit more of an "undone" look. They're a lot more low-maintenance than other short hairstyles as you can have so much fun when it comes to texture and styling.
I'm totally obsessed with this grungy haircut on Taylor Hill.
As you can see, a fringe is a great addition to a "grungecore" bob.

3. Slicked-Back Bob
Forget the slicked-back bun—2024 is all about the slicked-back bob. I've been seeing this style everywhere as of late, and I have no doubt that it'll remain in fashion for the foreseeable future.
"This bob can be styled with a firm gel and a comb to create that slick look," explains Vickery.
If J.Lo steps out with a wet-look bob, you just know it's going to be a trend.

4. Lived-in Layers
Here at Who What Wear UK, we're all about embracing your natural hair texture, so why not try lived-in layers for 2024? "Lived-in, softer shapes will continue to rise," says Vickery. "People want the ability to be low-maintenance and versatile when styling to suit the busy lifestyle that they lead."
If this picture doesn't tempt you to cut your hair, then I don't know what will.

The textured short pixie is the clear trend for spring-summer 2024. A more bold and updated version of the classic pixie cut that is perfect for both curly and straight hair.
A bob refers to a haircut that doesn't extend past chin-length while an inverted bob features stacked layers in the back and more curvy lines as you get to the front. What face shape suits a bob? Bobs suit a variety of face shapes, but the style specifically flatters those with an oval face shape.
Face shape, length of neck, and facial features are also key considerations. Because, while a lot of it comes down to personal preference, a bob might not be the right chop for everyone. 'Generally speaking, oval face shapes can pull off any bob style whether it's a long or a short bob,' adds Ladbrook.
Does short or long hair make you look younger? Long hair can enhance facial features by diverting attention away from wrinkles or age spots and adding volume to your hair. Short hair does not need to age you, though, as the style and texture of shorter hairstyles can add a youthful appearance.
Rounded 'halo'-like silhouettes are going huge,” says Tom. The halo haircut features “a rounded shape but can have layers and a fringe so it's perfect for if you wear your hair natural,” agrees Dom. “This cut can be embraced by all hair types to varying degrees and will hero natural curls and textured hair the most.
“The most universally flattering bobs will be the slightly longer ones that sit below the jawline,” he explains. These require little styling — just a great hairdryer such as the BaByliss Hydro Fusion Hair Dryer with the diffuser attachment, which allows hair to dry naturally and end up feeling super chic and undone.
A short, bob style that ends right below the ear (as shown on Kambri Crews above) is not only the perfect low-maintenance haircut that takes 5 minutes to style, it's also ultra-flattering. And pairing it with side-swept bangs brings attention to gorgeous eyes.
"It's got a bouffant crown and it's cut behind the ears. A lot of people with that cut over-style it and that's why it looks like a mom bob. A bob looks chic when it's not over-styled. A mom bob is not cut right. It's not personalized to the client."
1. The Lob. Of all the short haircuts to consider, the easiest to maintain is actually a textured long bob—also known as a lob. As the style grows out, the long layers won't fall awkwardly and will naturally shift into a mid-length look.
“A bob is one of those styles that can make some people look younger—if done right. But when it's done incorrectly or done on the wrong face, it can make you look older.”
Choppy bobs have many often short layers that can create extra volume, body, and movement that many classic one-length bobs lack. Basically, these aren't falling flat anytime soon.
A short layered cut is one of the best short hairstyles for older women. It's low maintenance and doesn't require a lot of day-to-day styling. If the short layered cut is done right it can give you a sassy look that will only enhance your face as you age! This one is a great go-to.
We find it hard to choose between the pixie cut and the bob, both of which are very popular with women over 60. Pixie cuts have lots of sass, while the bob is incredibly versatile and can be smooth, feathered, side-parted, or flicked out at the ends.
When it comes to youthful hair colors, honey blonde is always sitting near the top of our recommendations list. Firstly, lighter hair colors are synonymous with a more youthful look. Secondly, this particular shade incorporates warm, golden honey tones which will soften the blonde and add warmth to your complexion.
If there's anything setting off our trend radar this year, it's bangs. As a chic way to elevate any haircut, fringe has become a more prominent focus of many styles. That's why it's key you know how to customize this increasingly popular client request for each individual that sits in your chair.
Anyone who thought the bob would be a fleeting, post-pandemic trend is sorely mistaken. The entire world is obsessed with the short haircut, and they are everywhere–from the deepest depths of the countryside to Hollywood's most dazzling parties and red carpets.
In short, they're perfect. Curtain bangs continue their trend cycle domination; we named them as one of the biggest hair trends for 2024, and Carpenter's fringe is the perfect example, especially when paired with her enviable blowout.
