Highlights

  • Maki Zenin and Toji Fushiguro are two of the strongest characters in Jujutsu Kaisen despite not having cursed energy.
  • Maki unlocked her potential by sacrificing her remaining cursed energy, reaching the same level as Toji.
  • Maki and Toji are equally matched in terms of physical prowess, but fans often give the win to Toji due to his refined skills and experience.

Jujutsu Kaisen boasts an impressive gallery of powerful sorcerers and abilities, but there are two characters who are considered among the strongest in the series and have no cursed energy at all. These characters are Maki Zenin and Toji Fushiguro, both former members of the infamous Zenin clan who were able to fully utilize the power of their Heavenly Restrictions to bolster their strength and speed to unmatched levels.

During Jujutsu Kaisen's Culling Game arc, we would see Maki unlock her potential by sacrificing what little cursed energy she had. While this gave her an insane power boost, it wasn't until later that she would fully understand what she was capable of, putting her on the same level as Toji. However, despite the story often making it clear that Maki and Toji are on the same level in terms of physical prowess, many fans still think one or the other would win. So, in this article, we will analyze the backstory and feats of each character and answer who of these two powerhouses would come out on top.

Maki Zenin

Jujutsu Kaisen: Is Maki Stronger Than Toji? (1)

Maki was born into the Zenin family with her twin sister Mai, both of whom were ostracized and thrown to the side by their family. However, Maki got it way worse because, unlike her sister, she was born with a Heavenly Restriction that gave her extremely low levels of cursed energy, meaning that she had to wear special glasses to even see curses. Due to this, she had no inherent cursed technique but was blessed with above-average physical prowess, leading to her becoming a powerful cursed tool user.

During the Culling Game arc, Maki was sent to retrieve the cursed tools of the Zenin clan, only to be betrayed by her family who threw her into a pit full of cursed spirits with her sister to die. In this pit, Maki was able to get rid of her remaining cursed energy, allowing her to fully utilize the potential of her Heavenly Restriction, giving her physical prowess that was on the same level as Toji, striking fear into the hearts of the entire Zenin clan.

With her newfound abilities, Maki was able to butcher the entire Zenin clan. This is especially impressive because Maki, with no cursed energy or technique, was able to single-handedly destroy an entire clan that was full of people proficient in them. She was shown to do this with very little difficulty or resistance, effortlessly jumping from one cursed energy user to another and killing them. As she destroyed entire teams of Zenin assassins, she reminded many people of Toji.

After this, Maki was able to take down Cursed Spirit Naoya Zenin with the help of three other sorcerers. In this fight, she eventually realized what made Toji so legendary; the way he saw the world and the flow of cursed energy despite having none himself. Because of this, Maki was able to gain incredible power in the fight, which allowed for her to eventually help to defeat Naoya and later, was even able to contend with a sufficiently powerful Sukuna with the help of Yuji.

Toji Fushiguro

Toji Fushiguro was a legendary member of the Zenin clan who was born without a single drop of cursed energy within his body. While this meant that he couldn't have a cursed technique, his Heavenly Restriction made his body essentially perfect. This led to his physical abilities being on a level that was far beyond the abilities of even most sorcerers and would be the main contributing factor when it came to his successful career as an assassin in the Jujutsu world.

Like Maki, Toji was born with a Heavenly Restriction that stripped him of his cursed energy and led to his body being his main source of strength. However, unlike her, Toji was born without even a drop of cursed energy, which led to him being able to fully realize his Restriction from a very early age. Due to this, he was completely hated by his own clan. With his lack of cursed energy and technique, the Zenin clan would throw Toji into the pit filled with cursed spirits so that he would die, only for him to emerge victorious with nothing but a scar on his lip.

As for feats, Toji has some of the most impressive ones in the entire series. Firstly, he made his entire career out of assassinating sorcerers in the Jujutsu world, earning him the name "Sorcerer Killer". All of these sorcerers were presumably ones with their own techniques and cursed energy, yet they all fell to someone without them. Moreover, this moniker is what got him hired as the one to defeat Gojo and Geto.

During the Hidden Inventory arc, Toji went up against Gojo and Geto who were both considered to be the most powerful sorcerers on the planet at that moment. So much so, that they were put in a unique 'Special Grade' category within Jujutsu society due to their extremely powerful techniques and their mastery over them. Despite this, Toji was able to simply outclass and defeat them using not only his physical prowess, but also his intelligence and strategic planning. Over many weeks, he was able to bring down the effectiveness of Gojo's Six Eyes technique through tiring him out, wearing him down to the point where Toji could capitalize. This would lead to him being the only person to bypass Limitless and defeat Satoru Gojo for a time.

He was also able to defeat Suguru Geto later on, though this time he simply out-muscled Geto and overwhelmed him with his skill. Unlike what he did for Gojo, Toji took Geto head-on and defeated him without the need for any special tricks, killing all of Geto's curses with his strength and speed. Then, during the Shibuya Incident, Toji was able to make very light and easy work of Dagon, a Special Grade Cursed Spirit. Dagon was able to completely overwhelm Nanami, Naobito and Maki to the point where they had to escape his domain with Megumi's help. However, this made the reincarnated Toji enter the battle, after which he single-handedly obliterated Dagon.

So, in terms of who is the stronger one, writer Gege Akutami makes it very clear, multiple times, that both of these characters are on the same level. However, many fans tend to give the win to Toji simply due to him having refined his skills and experience over the years as Maki is still very new to these powers. Though a case could be made for Maki seeing as how she fought against Sukuna with the help of Yuji, the community generally gives it to Toji due to his feats and abilities. However, as time goes on, we may eventually see Maki growing even more and reaching a level far beyond anything else that we have seen.

Jujutsu Kaisen can be streamed on Amazon Prime.
