Celebrity hair stylist gives tips on how to colour your hair at home

You may have been able to experiment with all sorts of colours, cuts and styles in your 20s, 30s and 40s. But as women get older, some of the things they used to be able to pull off become prematurely ageing. Stylists at Bellissima spoke exclusively toExpress.co.ukabout how women in their 50s and beyond can avoid this and look younger fast.

Inevitably, as we mature in age our skin tone matures as well, and therefore changes.

Medline Plus reads: "With ageing, the outer skin layer (epidermis) thins, even though the number of cell layers remains unchanged.

"The number of pigment-containing cells (melanocytes) decreases. The remaining melanocytes increase in size. Ageing skin looks thinner, paler, and clear (translucent).

This means that some colours that used to suit your complexion may now not look quite right.

They explained: "Dependent on skin tone, I’d avoid going too light - platinum blonde.

"Instead, I’d recommend going a shade or two darker with a little hint of warmth."

Going beyond the basics of blonde, brunette and red, warm and cold refers to the shades within these categories.

According to L'Oreal, warm hair colours utilise warm undertones such as gold/yellow, copper/orange and red to create vibrant shades like golden brown and bright copper.

Cool hair colours on the other hand use cool undertones like ash/blue, iridescent/violet and matte/green to create rich shades like platinum blonde and mocha.

Opting for warmer tones rather than harsher, cooler ones "gives the appearance of younger, more radiant skin", according to the experts at Bellissima.

This is because they "reflect the light around the face with its warm tint". Warmer colours may include golden blonde, auburn, warm caramel, toffee and copper shades.

Another hair colouring issue that older women may come across is how to grow out the greys gracefully.

The expert said: "There is no right or wrong way to going grey, this is a tailored process to each individual depending on the length and shade of greys.

"I would, however, always recommend having low lights and highlights to mask the banding which can be caused when shifting to grey and growing out a colour."

As for hair cut, according to the expert, these are very "bespoke" to each person, so there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to anti-ageing cuts.

Instead, the expert would avoid cutting in accordance with the face shape rather than generic age.

However, there is one thing they recommend for an instantly more youthful appearance.

They said: "Adding in volume layers makes most people look more youthful as well as face framing.

"A straight haircut at just one length all the way round may feel dynamic, but it could also add on a couple of years."

The Bellissima expert continued: "Face framing allows you to contour the main points of your client’s face, drawing attention to the eyes and creating that beautiful fresh appearance.”
