Not sure whether to go for a middle or side parting? Here's what you need to know about nailing the perfect one for your face shape (2024)

"How do you wear your parting?"

It's the first question every hairdresser will ask before they start cutting your hair, and yet, most of us have never really given the answer much thought. We usually fall into one of two camps - a middle or a side parting - and our hair will obediently fall back into place after every wash as if by muscle memory. It wasn't until a debate went viral on TikTok that we all started taking a good look in the mirror on the matter of our hair parting.

"Side partings are for old people," Gen Z chorused on the social media platform (and when they say old, they mean Millennials - anyone born between 1981 and 1996) and the battle of the generations began. Middle-parting-loving millennials felt exposed, embarrassed and angry. Not only was Gen Z right – millennials do love a side parting (just think of the penchant for backcombed, swept-over hair, which coincided with the craze for Ugg boots and ra-ra skirts) but the blast also hit just as many millennials, myself included, were turning 30 (talk about hitting a nerve - since when did we become the old people?). It left me thinking that while I can't change my age, I sure can change my parting. Was it time to meet Gen Z in the middle?

Luke Hersheson, renowned hair stylist and CEO of Hershesons isn't so sure. "I don't think a side parting is ageing," he says reassuringly. " A centre parting is more undone and feels more grungy in a 90s way, but a side parting can look even cooler with connotations of an 80s supermodel."

Roman Sys, Stylist at Trevor Sorbie for L’Oréal Professionnel agrees: "Trends are constantly changing, but from a style perspective there are classics that will always be relevant and I do think that the middle parting will always be one of the most popular and seen looks, not just in editorial but in street style too."
