The key hair trends from the spring/summer 2024 fashion weeks (2024)

For spring/summer 2024 the world's four leading fashion capitals put on stunning displays of creativity from top-to-toe, from the clothing and accessories to the make-up looks and – not least – the hairstyles.

The catwalks this fashion month were mostly aligned on one theme which stood about above all others: low-key luxury. Yes, there were some elaborate hairstyles, including high maintenance finger waves, and – in contrast – grungier bedhead looks modelled at the likes of Miu Miu, but largely, laissez-faire locks and simple up-dos ruled the runways.

Not one style suits all, of course. But there's something for everyone to be inspired by. If you're nostalgic for the Nineties and Noughties (like so many of us continue to be), look to the alt version of the primary school ribbons seen at Christian Siriano, coquettish bows via Versace, and 'overnight waves' courtesy of Chanel. Or, if you want to elevate your look with simple yet sophisticated details take note of the sleek ponytails at Zimmermann and the mermaid-wet shine at seen at Valentino.

Here, see the most memorable (and wearable) hairstyles from the SS24 ready-to-wear season across some of our favourite shows.

The modern ballerina, as seen at Mugler

Where hair was worn up this spring/summer it was mostly crafted into sleek shapes, proving the perfect inspiration for wedding season. While we loved the French twists at Dior, the standout style of the season was the new ballerina bun, as seen at Mugler, Richard Quinn, Chiara Boni and Roksanda.

Mermaidcore, as seen at Valentino

Slicked, high-gloss hair has been a fashion week fixture for seasons, and the 2024 take on wet look locks bears some 'mermaidcore' glamour. The chicest version was seen at Valentino (pictured), where hair was swept back with some body, while at Jason Wu it was worn flat to the forehead styled with one literal wave.

Baby bobs, as seen at Brandon Maxwell

Long gone are the days of catwalk 'armies', where all models showcase identical haircuts and colours. Ergo, this wasn't a 'trend' as such – but blunt bobs were seen at Brandon Maxwell, Alessandra Rich, Ulla Johnson and Emilia Wickstead making us want to reach for the scissors like never before.

Deep side partings, as seen at Victoria Beckham

Deep side partings were seen at shows including Loewe, Jason Wu, Victoria Beckham, Hermés and Max Mara. Utilitarian feeling, with precision and purpose, the look oozes confidence compared to a more casual centre part.

That's not to say that side parts reigned supreme, though. At the majority of shows (including Vivetta, Eudon Choi, Richard Quinn, Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana and Alessandra Rich) hair fell in the middle, suggesting that centre partings are the everyday look du jour.

Laissez-faire hair, as seen at Ulla Johnson

Good news for those with limited time – and skill – when it comes to hair styling: nonchalance was an overarching theme at the spring/summer 2024 shows. Flowing and free, with natural texture (whatever that may be), '90s-inspired minimalism never felt so fresh. As models at 16Arlington, Ulla Johnson, Emilia Wickstead and Tibi all proved, low-key locks are officially 'in'.

Pretty ribbons, as seen at Christian Siriano

Hair accessories needn't be expensive; this season ribbons have had an upgrade. Whether ballet-inspired (as at Christian Siriano), or with an equestrian energy (at Collina Strada), the vibe felt somewhat DIY – perfect for upgrading your up-do with minimal effort.

Coquettish bows, as seen at Versace

The key hair trends from the spring/summer 2024 fashion weeks (7)

For a more coquettish take on the trend, look to Versace, a prime example of how hair bows are now regular fixtures on the runways (and red carpets). At Paul Costelloe and Vivetta bows were XXL – though still super feminine, while at Mirror Palais, chunky ribbons were tired around the necks and bowed at the back, with the hair nestled beneath it.

Braid waves, as seen at Chanel

The key hair trends from the spring/summer 2024 fashion weeks (8)

Remember TikTok's obsession with heatless hair curling last year? Well, the look achieved by braiding straight hair overnight looks set to put curling rod headbands back out of favour. These easy breezy waves were seen at Chanel (looking polished), Louis Vuitton (with some brushed-out fluffiness) and Brandon Maxwell (think ethereal). It's the perfect summer style.

Finger waves, as seen at Annie’s Ibiza

The key hair trends from the spring/summer 2024 fashion weeks (9)

From Annie’s Ibiza to Giorgio Armani, the decadent '20s made a comeback in the shape of finger waves on short hair this season. Modernity came in the texture – these were high-gloss – and the slightly deconstructed finish.

Polished ponytails, as seen at Zimmermann

The key hair trends from the spring/summer 2024 fashion weeks (10)

While laissez-faire hair dominated many shows, low ponytails with high-polish finishes were seen at the likes of Zimmernann, Victoria Beckham and Carolina Herrera. The look remains low-key, though, whispering luxury from all angles.
