Most commonly, irons have three modes; Low temperature, medium temperature and high temperature.

Press the steam control button intermittently and move the iron from top to bottom. As the steam produced is very hot, it softens the fibres and removes creases. Note: Never use the vertical steam function on an item being worn by anyone.

This is your iron's first (and lowest) temperature setting, which hits roughly 275 degrees. This level should be used on silk and synthetic fabrics like nylon, lycra, and acetate.

For Household Irons

Set your iron to the Cotton/Linen setting. Make sure steam setting is OFF for steam irons. Preheat material for 10 to 15 seconds.

Ironing Symbols

One dot: item may be ironed with low heat. Two dots: item may be ironed with medium heat. Three dots: item may be ironed with high heat. Crossed-out iron symbol: do not iron this item. Crossed-out two lines extending from bottom of iron symbol: do not use steam on this item.

Iron and TIBC are measured in micrograms per deciliter (mcg/dL). Normal results for iron are: 70 to 175 mcg/dL for men. 50 to 170 mcg/dL for women.

370°F - 410°F: Perfect for coarse or textured hair, gradually increase temperature until you achieve your desired look. 350°F - 370°F: Maintain healthy hair for naturally wavy tresses. 330°F - 350°F: The sweet spot for normal hair types that respond well to heat styling.

Fill the tank with water and choose appropriate setting for your garment, checking the label for advice. Place the garment on an ironing board and use a bit of extra steam on particularly tricky wrinkles. Hang it up afterwards to keep it wrinkle-free.

Temperature guide for fabrics

Set the high temperature of your iron around 400°F/204°C for no wrinkles in fabric. Wool: Although wool is a delicate fabric, it needs a softer heat. Use a medium temperature around 300°F/148°C. It is advisable to use a pressing cloth or iron it from the inside out to protect the garment.

The ideal thermostat temperature in the winter is 68 degrees Fahrenheit when you're at home. Energy.gov suggests that 68 degrees is a good room temperature while you're awake at home but recommends lowering it while you're asleep or away.

Cool iron is a bit of an oxymoron - it does not mean iron that is cool to touch! It actually means setting of 110 C (230 F). On most irons this means the setting with 1 dot. Do not use steam on cool iron setting.

Medium temperature: Setting 2 or 3; often 230 to 300 F; designed for acrylic, lace, polyester, wool, and silk. High temperature: Linen, cotton, viscose/rayon, and denim are ironed in this setting; 300 F and higher; setting 4 and up.

Linen, cotton and denim: These fabrics hold wrinkles well, so they require the highest heat, from 150 to 200 degrees.

The iron symbol with dots means that it can definitely be ironed, but you need to stick with their temperature recommendations. Again, one dot is low, two dots mean medium, and three dots is high.
