How do you diagnose ABS on a trailer? ›

During startup, when the auxiliary circuit is first powered, the ABS runs a self-check. The ABS status light comes on for 3 to 5 seconds, and you might hear the air valves “chuffing”. If the ABS status light fails to light up, blinks, or comes on and stays on, an ABS fault is indicated.

Without a scan tool capable of reading ABS codes, a visual inspection is the easiest thing to do when diagnosing an ABS light. ABS sensor wiring can be inspected from underneath a vehicle that is safely supported on ramps — you may not even need to take the wheels off.

Disconnect and reconnect the battery: disconnecting the battery can reset the vehicle's computer systems, potentially clearing the ABS light. However, this is usually a temporary fix and the light may come back on if there is an underlying issue.

Resetting the ABS light.

Disconnect the positive cable from your car battery, then let the electrical system's residual power drain by activating the headlight switch. This method can sometimes reset the ABS warning light. Or, use an OBD-II scanner to reset the ABS light.

Release the brake pedal and let the ABS/TCS lights blink repeatedly. After you let the light blink for a minute, turn the ignition to the off position and remove the paper clip. The ABS/TCS light should reset the next time you start the car.
