Alpaca wool is often described as stronger than mohair, finer than cashmere, smoother than silk, softer than cotton, warmer than goose down and better heat and body regulating than thermal knit. Due to its quality, alpaca is considered as one of the most luxurious natural fibers in the world. Alpaca fibers are so fine and clear, but at the same time stronger than ordinary wool, that minimal fluff formation occurs. This means that the products look new and fresh for a longer period of time.
Compared to ordinary wool, alpaca wool is warmer, lighter and does not contain lanolin. Lanolin is a substance found in ordinary wool, which helps to make the wool water-repellent. Although alpaca wool does not contain lanolin, it can keep water out, and at the same time it means that alpaca is very hypoallergenic.
The alpaca lives mainly in the Andes Mountains of Peru, where climatic conditions are harsh. The temperature can fluctuate by up to 50 degrees within 24 hours. It is the wool of the alpaca that makes it able to withstand these temperature changes. The history of the alpaca goes back more than 6000 years, all the way back to the Inca Empire. Due to the fine wool of the alpaca, the alpacas became the way of the Incas to show wealth. The more alpacas they owned, the richer they were. Despite the long history of the alpaca, they were not known in either Europe or the United States until quite late. In the USA, the first alpacas were imported in 1983. In Denmark, it was Elvang who introduced products woven from alpaca wool.
