Have you ever pulled a wool sweater from your washer, only to find that it’s three sizes smaller than it should be? Everyone has been there. But not everyone has recovered from a wool-shrinking snafu.
Learning how to unshrink your wool sweater—in addition to how to not shrink your wool sweater in the first place—really isn’t that difficult. Take a look at the following tips.
How to not shrink your wool sweater
Before you even dab a tiny drop of any detergent on a woolen garment, you need to check the care instructions. If there is a tag with directions on how not to shrink your wool sweater, follow these to the letter. If not, you can choose from the three options below.
Dry cleaning: First, the easy—but expensive—way to not shrink wool is to have it professionally cleaned. But that’s not very thrifty, nor does it embrace the DIY spirit.
Handwashing: One of the most cost-efficient means of cleaning wool clothing is to hand-wash it. Here are directions on how not to shrink your wool sweater by going the handwashing route.
Fill a clean sink or basin with cool water and add one teaspoon to one tablespoon of mild, bleach-free detergent. There are special soaps made specifically for washing woolens if you prefer to use those. Agitate the water and the soap to create suds.
Place the sweater in the soapy water and slowly swirl it around for a minute or two. Make sure you don’t twist or bunch your sweater as you swirl.
Remove your wool sweater from the water and gently squeeze it to get out as much water as you can. Don’t wring or twist, though, as you may damage the material.
Empty your sink or basin and refill it with fresh water. Dip your sweater in and out of this water to remove the soap. Then, squeeze the water out just as you did in the step above.
Blot the sweater on a clean, lint-free towel. Do this by setting the clothing on the folded towel and pressing lightly to remove excess water. You can also lay the sweater flat on the towel and gently roll the two into a kind of clothing burrito. When you unroll the towel, you’ll have removed a lot of the water.
Dry your sweater on a fresh towel that’s clean and free of lint. You’ll need to make sure the sweater isn’t in direct sunlight or heat. Additionally, you’ll want to reshape the sweater before leaving it to dry.
Machine washing: If handwashing is a little too intense for you, it is possible to clean your wool sweater in the washing machine. Here again, you’ll want to use a very mild detergent or special wool soap and cool water. In addition, you should invest in a mesh delicate wash bag that’s large enough to hold your sweater. You’ll actually place the sweater in this bag before tossing it into the washer. After the cycle is over, reshape your sweater and lay it flat to dry on a towel that’s out of the way of sun and direct heat.
And that’s how to not shrink your wool sweater. But what happens if it’s already too late for the above steps? Then it sounds like you need to know how to unshrink your wool sweater.
How to unshrink your wool sweater
So you’ve already turned your sweater into a crop top. While that’s currently en vogue, it may not be your style. So here’s how to unshrink your wool sweater in six easy steps.
Fill your sink or a basin with tepid water. To this, you’ll add about 1/3 a cup of baby shampoo or a soap made specifically for cleaning wool.
Soak your sweater in this mixture for about 10 minutes.
Empty your sink or bucket and lightly squeeze your sweater. Don’t twist, bunch or wring it. Also—and this is important—do not rinse the sweater in clean water.
Lay the sweater flat on top of a clean, lint-free towel. Lightly press the sweater into the towel, or roll the towel up with the sweater inside.
Get a clean towel and lay the sweater flat on top of this. While the sweater is still damp, you can gently stretch and reshape the fabric.
Leave your sweater on the towel to dry, making sure it’s not in direct sun or heat.

Your woolen garment will shrink in the dryer, because it makes it subject heat and friction. Even when you use the low-heat level, the machine does use friction to dry your wool, which can cause pilling and felting. Airdrying wool garments is much better for them, since it prevents shrinking.
Turn your wool garment inside out, then hand wash in clean, lukewarm water, approximately 30°C, using a mild and gentle detergent. Allow to soak for a period of 10 minutes before rinsing thoroughly firstly in lukewarm water, then finally in cold water.
To machine wash your sweaters, use either the “delicate,” “handwash,” or “slow” cycle settings, and always wash with cold water. To give your sweaters extra protection, use a mesh laundry bag to reduce friction. Avoid washing sweaters with heavy or bulky items, like jeans, towels, and sweatshirts.
After wetting the sweater, place it in a dryer on high heat. You should use the highest heat setting possible, especially if you want to shrink your sweater significantly. Run the dryer until the sweater is completely dry. This should shrink your sweater a couple of sizes.
Add a wool detergent, preferably a Woolmark-approved detergent. Set your cycle to the wool setting. If your washing machine does not have a wool cycle, then it is recommended to use the cold water wash or wash cycle for delicates.

To unshrink a sweater, create a mixture of water and fabric softener, baby shampoo, or hair conditioner in a bucket to soak your sweater in for at least 20 minutes.
The heat and action in the washing machine can cause wool to shrink. Wool fibers are made out of protein scales. Heat and motion cause the scales to grow and rub against one another, which draws the fibres closer together. The wool shrinks more as the fibres get closer together.
If you just want to shrink wool sweaters a little, try spraying your wool sweater with water so it is lightly moist and then throw it in the dryer for five minutes. Keep checking on your sweater to see that it doesn't shrink too much—but this method should help shrink your sweater little by little.
Wool should only be washed on a gentle cycle using cold water. If possible, turn the garment inside out before washing it. Remove the garment from the washing machine promptly when the cycle has finished. Air-dry it, following the same procedure as Step 6 in the hand-washing instructions.
Avoiding heavy duty cycles, fast spins and high-heat drying can also prevent shrinkage. Use delicate cycles instead, and place delicate clothes in a mesh laundry bag for added protection. When drying, consider a low-heat or air dry setting. When in doubt, always follow the instructions on your garment's care tag.
Fortunately, the process of wool shrinkage is not as irreversible as it is commonly assumed. A careful process of washing and re-stretching can restore your jumper to its original size, sparing you the need to replace it.
To un-shrink the wool, soak the garment in cold water with a mild wool friendly soap for about 10 minutes. This unlocks the fibres in the wool. Then hang or lay the garment out in a cool place. Stretch the garment out to its original dimensions.
Often, many people wonder if wool can stretch. Whether or not wool can stretch solely depends on the wool used to knit the sweater. Different types of wool, such as merino wool, have a tendency to stretch if you're careless when washing them. Wool also can felt and shrink if you're not careful when washing them.
Begin by soaking the wool in a bath of warm water and baby shampoo or hair conditioner, then take the wool out and gently stretch it manually to get it to its original dimensions. In less than twenty minutes your garment should be back to its normal size and look as good as new.
